Driven by a commitment to professional excellence, Oates Associates, Inc. – a 100% employee-owned civil and structural engineering and surveying firm – celebrates President and Chief Operating Officer Bruce Schopp, PE, SE, who was inducted into the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) College of Fellows. Bruce’s recognition reflects not only his distinguished career, but also his dedication to advancing the engineering profession.

The ACEC College of Fellows recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, and contributions to the consulting engineering profession and their communities. Bruce’s professional journey spans over 40 years, progressing through key roles at Oates Associates, including Project Engineer, Structural Engineer, Project Manager, Bridge Department Manager, Principal, and currently President and Chief Operating Officer. He serves on the firm’s Board of Directors, provides strategic insights for growth, and has led numerous multi-million-dollar infrastructure projects, improving public safety and advancing engineering excellence.

His leadership within ACEC spans state and national levels, where he has held key board roles including Board Chair and Director of ACEC Illinois, as well as chairing several committees. Bruce has worked closely with ACEC and other agencies to address prevailing wage issues, uphold Qualifications-Based Selection (QBS) standards, and ensure licensure requirements are met – and all Professional Engineer and Structural Engineer Acts are followed. Through these efforts, Bruce has demonstrated a commitment to high professional standards within the industry.

Bruce is deeply committed to advancing the engineering community. He serves on the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Engineering Advisory Board and has helped establish scholarships through Oates Associates for future engineers. His volunteer work includes mentoring students through MathCounts, Discover E, and Student Engaged in Engineering programs, as well as supporting charitable initiatives through professional societies, Oates Associates, and personal interests.

“Bruce’s induction into the ACEC College of Fellows is a reflection of his commitment to our profession, our employee-owners, and our clients,” said Jeffrey Rensing, PE, SE, Chief Executive Officer of Oates Associates. “We are proud to celebrate this milestone and grateful for the example Bruce sets for our team and the next generation of engineers.”
