Schoolhouse Trail over Illinois Route 111
Pontoon Beach, Illinois
- Madison County Transit
Creating safe and seamless connections for cyclists and pedestrians is at the heart of Madison County Transit’s (MCT) mission. The Schoolhouse Trail, a popular segment of the MCT Trail System, crosses Illinois Route 111 near Horseshoe Lake Road, a busy corridor where high-speed traffic and continuous turning movements compromise safety and convenience.
To improve safety and maintain connectivity, MCT partnered with Oates Associates to conduct a conceptual feasibility study for a grade-separated crossing at this location. The study evaluated two alternatives, an underpass (box culvert) and an overpass (bridge), to determine the most practical and effective way to eliminate the at-grade conflict. Analysis focused on roadway characteristics, topography, alignment adjustments, connectivity impacts, and user experience, ensuring the proposed solution enhances safety while preserving the trail’s role as a vital regional connector.
Grade separation was determined to significantly enhance safety by eliminating conflicts between trail users and motor vehicles on IL Route 111. An overpass (bridge) was the preferred option due to a high water table and the potential for drainage and flooding concerns within an underpass.
The new bridge, designed by Oates Associates, eliminates the safety risks associated with at-grade crossings, allowing trail users to cross IL Route 111 without interacting with vehicular traffic. Beyond safety, its design complements the surrounding landscape, adding a visually appealing element to the corridor with accent lighting and signage for branding. This project underscores MCT’s commitment to expanding safe, accessible active transportation options while strengthening long-term trail connectivity for the entire community.
