I-55 / 70 & US ROUTE 40 INTERCHANGE
CONSTRUCTION COST: $11,000,000
COMPLETION DATE: 1990 (study)
CLIENT: ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

A severe curve on I-55 at the interchange with heavily traveled U.S. Route 40, created a dangerous section of highway that experienced a very high accident rate. Oates Associates was enlisted to plan the reconstruction of the existing two-directional interchange to improve safety. The scope of the project included preliminary planning, a design report and environmental assessment.

The project involved the evaluation of various interchange design alternatives, preparation of Interchange Design Studies for the selected alternates, value engineering studies and public meeting and hearing documents and displays. A full field survey was included, along with preparation of right-of-way documents.

Environmental impacts studied included socio-economic, agricultural land, air quality and noise. No significant environmental impacts were identified.
