Mr. Schopp is our chief structural engineer. A firm principal, he is responsible for highway design projects and all bridge and building structural designs. Mr. Schopp joined the firm in 1985 after 3 years with the Madison County Highway Department. His primary experience has been in the area of bridge design, having designed structures ranging from 2-lane box culverts to interstate highway bridges and overpasses. He also has experience in building structure design and structural inspections. He currently manages the following projects:

  • I-70 Relocation for IL Route 203 to Relocated Route 3, St. Clair County, IL — Designing over 1 mile of new interstate, including 9 new bridge structures.
  • IL-157 Resurfacing and Grade Separation, IDOT District 8 — 2-mile resurfacing project that includes a new bridge carrying 5-lane IL-157 over a rail line.

Mr. Schopp has managed, or been involved in, the preparation of plans and contract documents for several roadway projects and bridge design projects including:

  • Lebanon Avenue Bridge, Belleville, IL — Replacement of a single span steel beam bridge over the new St. Clair County MetroLink extension.
  • Bridge Condition / Hydraulic Reports, IDOT District 3 - Bridge Condition and Hydraulic Reports for 8 structures throughout IDOT District 3.
  • Bridge Condition Reports, IDOT District 3 - Bridge Condition Reports for 20 structures throughout IDOT District 3.
  • IL 160/177 (FAP Rte 690), Clinton and Washington Counties, IL - Reconstruction of five bridges (seismic category "B") spanning the Kaskaskia River and overflow streams.
  • Seven Hills Road - Railroad grade separation structure.
  • Calhoun County Feasibility Study — Initiated by the 1993 flood, this study evaluated alternatives to improve access across the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers along a 20-mile corridor from Grafton to Hardin, Illinois.
  • FAP Route 310 (I-255 Extension), Madison County, IL - Four miles of new expressway with eight bridges in seismic category "B".
  • Illinois Route 140, Madison County, IL - Bridge replacements and roadway rehabilitation.
  • Toll Plaza 39 Tri-State Tollway, Chicago, IL - Expansion and roadway widening with two bridges.
  • FAP Route 412, Woodford and Marshall Counties, IL - Five miles of new expressway with two bridges.
  • Northwest Tollway, Winnebago County, IL - New East Riverside Boulevard interchange bridge.
  • Illinois Routes 16, 111 & 127, Montgomery and Macoupin Counties, IL - Bridge replacements and bridge and roadway rehabilitation.
  • Illinois Route 157, Caseyville, IL - Bridge replacements and roadway rehabilitation.
  • Robinson School Road Bridge, Belleville, IL - Bridge replacement and roadway approach reconstruction.

Prior to joining Oates Associates, Mr. Schopp was employed by the Madison County Highway Department as a Resident Engineer on the following projects:

  • Federally funded bridge project involving construction of a 3-span steel girder bridge on pile bent abutments and pile-supported piers. As Resident Engineer Schopp was responsible for all required project documentation.
  • Three federally funded bridge projects involving 3-span precast prestressed deck beam bridge on pile bent abutments and pile-supported piers.
  • Locally funded project involving a box culvert bridge.
  • Locally funded project involving a structural plate pipe arch.
